NextGen 911 – Addressing

The State of Illinois passed the Emergency Telephone System Act (50 ILCS 750) which states that every 9-1-1- system in Illinois shall provide Next Generation service by July, 2020.

The Village of McLean has been working with the McLean County ETSB Addressing Technician and the
Village of McLean’s effective date is September 1, 2019.

Village Code requires that street address numbers be affixed to the property and meet the following
requirement:

•     Easily readable from the street on or near the front entrance to the property

First responders suggest the following regarding address numbers:

•     Not be covered by ornamentation (wreaths, decorations, etc.)
•     Not be covered by vegetation (bushes, trees, etc.)

Rural Area of Mt. Hope & Funks Grove Townships (McLean County)

When addresses are not clearly visible in rural areas, precious time can be lost during emergency responses. The Fire District exists for the purpose of providing you service and assistance, but we have to be able to find you first! The Mt. Hope-Funks Grove Fire Protection District has tried to resolve this problem by providing rural residents the name of the business that you can purchase from, The Traffic Sign Store, located at 1231 N Mason St, Bloomington, IL 61701.  Why should residents post a sign at the beginning of their driveway?

  • Emergency responders can only help you when they find your location.
  • Posting your address number provides easy identification of your location for responders who are not always exactly familiar with your area.
  • Every second counts during an emergency and posting your address number allows emergency responders to save critical time especially in reaching rural parts of the District.
  • Homes are often hidden from view at the beginning of the driveway, only posting numbers on your home does not help responders recognize where you live since they must first turn down your driveway to find your home.
  • Posting your address on a reflective sign is recommended by the Mt. Hope-Funks Grove Fire Protection District.
